Springfield Receives EPA Climate Showcase Grant

The Environmenta Protection Agency announced nearly $500,000 in grant money going to the City of Springfield to help the community increase energy efficiency, saving consumers money and reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions, at an event at the DeBerry Elementary School gymnasium on Monday, March 8, 2010. Mayor Sarno Appoints a New City Library Director

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno has announced the appointment of Molly “Lee” Fogarty as Director of the Springfield City Library.  Fogarty has been serving as Interim Library Director since August 5, 2009, after former Library Director Emily Bader retired after 36 years of dedicated service to the residents of Springfield.  The Springfield Library Commission voted unanimously on February 3, 2010, that Lee Fogarty be recommended to Mayor Sarno for appointment as Library Director. Titeflex Tax Agreement to Save 100 City Jobs

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, city officials and Titeflex Corporation management have announced that a Special Tax Agreement (STA) has been approved that will retain over 100 manufacturing jobs at the Titeflex Corporation, located in Springfield since 1956. More >>


Home Energy Savings Seminar

The City of Springfield, in partnership with the Massachusetts Municipal Association will be hosting a Free seminar on Home Energy Savings on Tuesday, March 16th at 6:00 p.m. at the Basketball Hall of Fame. The seminar will provide easy and cost-effective techniques to reduce energy consumption and save you money. RSVP required. More >>


City Councilor Retreat

Members of the Springfield City Council will participate in a strategic planning retreat on Saturday, February 27, 2010, at the Good Life Center, 2nd Floor, 1600 East Columbus Avenue.  The retreat commences at 8:00 a.m., with opening remarks from Mayor Domenic J. Mayor Sarno Invites President Obama to Play Basketball

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno has written a letter to President Obama inviting him to play in a charity basketball game with Senator Scott Brown. The proposed contest would be a two-on-two game, with the two politicians picking their "best female basketball player." Said Sarno, "Without divulging his entire game plan, I have a feeling [Brown's] best female player will be his daughter, Ayla Brown, a star basketball player at Boston College."

Re-Development Opportunity: 52 Westminster Street

The City of Springfield is currently soliciting proposals for the purchase and redevelopment of 52 Westminster Street, a 4,000 square foot Victorian home located within the McKnight Historic District, which is listed on National Register of Historic Places. The City is making $100,000 of CDBG funding available for exterior and structural improvements to the property. More >>

NEA Foundation Awards $1.25M to Springfield

A Springfield partnership bringing together an education union, the school district, and community leaders has been selected to participate in a $1.25 million, five-year effort to transform a set of the area’s most challenged schools into local and national models for teaching and learning. City Auction Raises $648,600

Springfield's first 2010 auction of properties in Tax Title raised $648,600 while putting 31 parcels back on the tax rolls. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno has stated that “Getting these properties back on the tax rolls is a huge benefit to the City. More importantly, when these residences are rehabbed it has a tremendous impact on the abutting property owners’ quality of life and adds to the overall aesthetics of our City’s neighborhoods.” Auction Results >>

Hasbro's Giving Tree Program Marks 25th Year

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno was on hand to help Hasbro celebrate the success of its 2009 holiday toy drive. This season’s Giving Tree program – the 25th anniversary – generated 60,000 toys and games for underprivileged children in the Greater Springfield area, more than 650 pounds of foods for the region’s families in need, and spread 1,500 Acts of Kindness throughout the region. Mayor Proposes Expanded Tax Relief for Seniors

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno has submitted a proposal to the Springfield City Council to expand property tax relief to qualifying senior citizens. The plan would bring more households into eligibility for statutory tax exemptions by raising the limits on income and assets for homeowners.  More >>


Citizens Bank Funds Food and Heat Assistance

The Citizens Bank Foundation announced it is donating $100,000 to three western Massachusetts nonprofit organizations that provide heating and food assistance to local residents in need. The Food and Fuel Initiative, aimed to help low-income residents cope with food and heating costs during the winter months, will support the Council of Churches of Greater Springfield, The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts and the Western Massachusetts Network to End Homelessness. Springfield Mourns Passing of Former Library Director

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stated that he was very sorry to hear about Springfield’s former Library Director Emily Bader’s passing and that his thoughts and prayers are with her husband Hank and their family.  “Emily was a truly dedicated leader, who was so passionate to our library causes,” stated Sarno. MassMutual Helps Beautify Pine Point

A new Springfield Housing Authority (SHA) program is off to a fast start with a $15,000 donation to the Robinson Gardens Improvement Project from the MassMutual Financial Group. The Friends of SHA is a new program aimed at encouraging public/private partnerships to improve the quality of life, education, and job opportunities for Springfield residents. More >>


Single Stream Recycling Program Goes Citywide December 1

Residents with city rubbish service will no longer have to sort their recyclable material into separate bins, which means recycling has never been easier.  Large blue wheeled carts for recycling will be delivered in phases, with Phase 1 residents receiving them November 16 - 25. More >>


Vacant and Foreclosing Properties Registration

The City of Springfield has set a deadline of November 1, 2009 for property owners and banks or mortgage companies to register vacant or foreclosing properties with the City.  Registration forms and information are available from the City’s website or by calling 3-1-1 (413-736-3111 from outside Springfield).
