The Mayor of the City of Springfield, Domenic J. Sarno; Executive Director of the Finance Control Board, Stephen Lisauskas; and the Executive Director of the Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management, Patrick J. Sullivan will announce the success of the Energy Measures implemented city-wide at the Duggan Middle School located on Wilbraham Road in Springfield. Joining them will be representatives of Bay State Gas Company who will be presenting the City with a rebate check for over $700,000.
Mayor Sarno stated, "I would like to express my gratitude to Bay State Gas and Siemens in ensuring these savings to the City. The management of our energy resources is critical in the long term financial stability of Springfield. I am pleased with the opportunities for a "Greener Springfield" as a direct benefit from these improvements. The benefits will be an annual savings and ensure Springfield has quality buildings for our students and teachers."
Stephen Lisauskas, Executive Director of the Finance Control Board stated, "The City has struggled to balance its budget and energy usage plays a big part; approximately $12 M is spent on utilities and rate increases of up to 30% per year, clearly puts City resources at risk. This initiative has stabilized the budget and at the same time, provides significant building improvements throughout the City.
Ian Bowles, Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary stated, "Energy costs take a toll on municipal budgets, and energy efficiency is the way to get those costs under control. I congratulate the City of Springfield and Bay State Gas for taking a significant step today to realize energy savings. The Commonwealth, through our Division of Energy Resources, is proud to be a partner in this effort."
Patrick Sullivan credited Mayor Domenic Sarno and the Finance Control Board for approving funds to initiate this project. "The proposed projects are critical to our building investments and in some cases are a decade overdue. This initiative has provided state of the art heating equipment and management controls and improves the learning and working environment within our buildings."
Bay State's Derek Buchler, Manager of Demand Side Management adds, "We are extremely pleased to be part of this very important energy efficiency initiative. Engineering estimates indicate the city can expect to save almost 350,000 therms in the first year and have a lifetime savings estimated at almost 5,000,000 therms. That is enough energy to heat over 4000 homes for an entire year. This project also highlights the cooperation between Bay State Gas, its municipal customers, and the state sponsored energy efficiency programs. Collectively we have the ability to save energy and improve the quality of life."
